This week the Year 5 class had the opportunity to attend a workshop at the St Albans Museum and Gallery. The workshop focused on celebrating black heroes and looked at people such as Walter Tull, Katherine Johnson and Harriet Tubman.
Walter Tull became the first black officer in the navy and played for Tottenham Hot Spurs. Katherine Johnson worked for NASA and helped get man to the moon. Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and helped over 300 other black slaves escape, risking her life over and over again to help others.
What the children learned was that these achievements, whilst impressive, were even more significant because of the disadvantages these figures experienced due to racism.
