This half term’s history topic has focused on what life was like on the Home Front during WW2. We have looked at many aspects of the war including:
- The reasons why Britain had to go to war in 1939
- Why children were evacuated and what the experience was really like
- How Britain was able to stand firm against the German threat
- How people managed to carry on normal life during the war
- Rationing of food and clothing
We have also looked at Kindertransport and learned about how thousands of Jewish children were safely evacuated to Britain just before the outbreak of war. In our English lessons we have written our own recounts of what it was like to escape Nazi Germany and start a new life here.
In our D&T lessons we have encompassed the spirit of Make Do and Mend by designing and creating soft toys for a child by reusing and repurposing old clothing and materials. We have learned the stitching techniques needed to create our toys, how to sew on a button and other embellishments and have evaluated our designs against a number of criteria
As part of this project, the Year 6 children have also produced some incredible projects and models for their home learning.
