St Albans Cathedral
The Abbey School and St Albans Cathedral share a very special relationship. Abbey School is the trust deed school of the Cathedral and we are supported in our worship, with our Foundation Governors and in our Christian ethos by the Cathedral staff. The school sits within the Abbey Orchard and to this day a ‘tunnel’ still exists from the school to the Cathedral, which was used to send laundry back and forth from the laundry garden of the monastery.
The whole school make the short journey over to the Cathedral for a weekly service in the Lady Chapel, which is usually led by the Youth Chaplain. Parents are always very welcome at these services so our whole school community can worship together each week. At special times in the church year we hold a Eucharist service at Easter, Harvest and Christmas in the Nave of the Cathedral where children take part in leading the service. Some of our pupils are choristers so music plays a big part in these services.
Each week members of the Cathedral Clergy’s team visits our school to lead an assembly of fun singing, bible stories and prayers.
As we are a Church of England school linked with the Cathedral eight of our fourteen governors come from a Christian background, from the Cathedral and the wider Diocese, ensuring the Christian ethos of the school is upheld in every aspect of school life.
