We have had two fantastic days of Design and Technology in Year 6 this week! The children were given the brief of designing and constructing models of playground equipment, using a range of materials including wood, cardboard, foil, wire, string, lolly sticks, paper and plastic straws, pipe cleaners and fabric. All of the models had to fulfil the following design criteria:
Be fun
Perform different functions
Be safe
Look appealing
Use sustainable/environmentally friendly materials wherever possible
Mr Astley very kindly gave up two mornings to spend with us which enabled the children to learn how to use equipment including a bench hook, cutting knife, a vice, a saw, pliers, 2 drill bits and a clamp. We also had hot glue guns on the go and I was so impressed with how sensibly and carefully they worked and the teamwork that was also visible throughout. I’m sure you’ll agree that the results are really impressive!
