The children explored the human body through the song ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ and hands-on labelling activities. They then developed their understanding of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. We made pipe cleaner models of our sense organs. To encourage ownership of their learning, a different child was selected each week as ‘Scientist of the Week’, taking the lead in our investigations by measuring, recording data and drawing conclusions.

In our TASTE Lesson Theo R was our Scientist. After learning about the mouth and tongue, we learnt that we have different taste buds on our tongue. These taste buds help us detect the different tastes. Everyone in Year 1 had the chance to try our four main foods/liquids: Cocoa-bitter, honey-sweet, Lemon Juice-sour and crisps-salty. They then voted on the tastes they liked and disliked. Theo R collected the results of our testing to see which taste was the most popular and least popular. He then put to results into a bar graph to show the most and least favourite tastes.

In our SMELL lesson, Joshua was our Scientist. After learning about our nose and how we smell, the children tried different scents. They voted on the smells they liked and disliked and explained why. We used tally marks to record the results. Then Joshua had 3 scent pairs that he had to match up only using his sense of smell. It was a very tricky task!
