School Inspections

Our priority at the Abbey School is to establish a happy and caring learning environment and to enable each child to develop to his or her full potential in many fields. We pride ourselves on high academic standards, but also place great emphasis on the development of the whole child and aim to prepare each child to take the next step in their education with confidence and with an understanding of the world in which they live.

Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) Report

We are delighted to share the wonderful outcome of our SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) inspection, which took place on 1 October 2025. The report is full of praise for our school and confirms that “The Abbey School is living up to its foundation as a Church school and is enabling pupils and adults to flourish.”

The inspector recognised the strength of our Christian vision and how “Live fully, care deeply, grow together” is at the heart of everything we do. He saw a school where children and adults are cared for, encouraged and inspired to be the very best they can be.

The inspector described Abbey School as “a joyful, calm and welcoming school that radiates care and kindness,” where pupils and staff “flourish together in a culture shaped by love and friendship.” He was particularly impressed with how our children live out our values every day, showing compassion, fairness and responsibility in their words and actions.

The report highlights many strengths, including:

  • “Leaders are ambitious for the school and place pupils at the heart of decisions and policies.”
  • “A culture of dignity and care, rooted in love, friendship and forgiveness, creates a joyful community.”
  • “Strong leadership in Religious Education has established a broad and challenging curriculum.”
  • “The school benefits from strong community links with the Cathedral, parents and local groups.”
  • “Pupils and staff feel valued and supported… wellbeing systems are embedded, helping the school community to flourish.”

The inspector also recognised the impressive ways in which our pupils live out the school’s values through their actions and how they make a difference in the world, noting that “justice and responsibility are lived out daily.” Whether through environmental projects, charitable work, or supporting one another in school, our children truly embody our vision to “live fully, care deeply and grow together.”

We are especially proud of the recognition given to Religious Education. The report celebrates the “strong leadership in RE” and the “broad and challenging curriculum” that helps pupils to “develop a firm understanding of a range of religions.” We would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful RE Leader, Mrs Huntley, for her dedication, expertise and passion in leading this area so successfully. Her work has made a real difference to the spiritual and academic life of our school.

We are, of course, continuing to build on this success. The report offers some helpful next steps, such as strengthening how our vision shapes every aspect of school life and developing a shared approach to spirituality across the school. We welcome this as part of our ongoing journey of growth and improvement.

We could not be prouder of our children, our staff, our governors and you our wonderful parents and carers for everything you do to make Abbey School such a special, caring and inspiring community.

Together, we have created a school where every child can thrive and this inspection and the recent Ofsted inspection recognised that so clearly.
